I've hidden. I admit it. Now I've rediscovered new things about myself and my life. I hope, that in some small fraction, I can help some other woman or man out there struggling with getting diagnosed with a terrifying disease. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 25, I felt my whole world implode. My family. My friends. Everything changed so suddenly. I wasn't able to keep up. I watched mind numbing movies. Just to cope. At age 25 you've just barely discovered yourself and getting a grip on your presence. First: I lost my footing. Then I lost my breast. I lost my self confidence. I lost my self esteem. After my mastectomy in Feb 2007, I started to heal physically. Nothing could possibly prepare me for what was about to happen next. Chemotherapy was the single hardest thing I've ever had to endure in my entire life. There were deep dark holes that swallowed me and overwhelmed me. I went into hiding. I couldn't face the world. I couldn't face society after that. I have been in hiding for a long time. Hiding from the scary things lurking out in the world. I've finally admitted it. And have rediscovered myself from it all. Anyone who has been through a terrifying diagnoses, probably experienced the same sort of things. Losing/Loss, hiding, admittance, and the rediscovering. They always say there is a grieving process. guilt, denial, sadness and acceptance. Perhaps mine closely resembles that. But I feel that when you go through chemotherapy, there is much more. When your hair starts to fall out, it's a visual sign that you are receiving treatments. People do notice. Where I used to be the "look straight into your eyes" person, now I avoided gazes because people had that inquisitive look in their eyes. I just wanted to get through the store and back home where it was safe.
I'm editting this in because April Lorier brought up that she had minor children at the time. It does add a certain element that many going through cancer (and other illnesses) face. I have two young sons. 7 and 2. I missed birthday parties. I missed school events.

That was the hardest. When my older son turned 7, I was in bed zoned out from all the anti-nausea meds my doctors had perscribed me.

I also want to add how hard it was at first, to watch shampoo commercials. People thought I was being over emotional, but it was hard to watch women swishing their perfect locks around... while mine were falling out.
To the many family members of people going through cancer treatments, I will say this... Never say "it's just hair" or "it's just a breast". I got that often and it was hard to not break down into tears and try to explain to them how much that hurt when they said that to me.
How can they possible know how it felt? To be in your 20's, just out of your teens, not in the comfortable 30's and 40's. And lose your hair? It wasn't ever about the hair to me, it was about losing my dignity, having the look of being ill. People treat you so differently.

I wanted to edit this in because it was and still is a big part of my life, as I suspect it always will be.Many don't go into the hiding part. I certainly did. How can you get help to cope? Don't take it on by yourself. Reach out to friends and family. You have every right to explain to them that you're too tired for lectures or speeches. You'll have someone at some point tell you what you need to do. And I'm sure they mean well, they love you afterall. That is their way to cope. To give you advice and push you to make a decision. Don't let them. It's hard...and I mean really really hard...to tell people to stop digging your grave. A diagnoses doesn't mean certain death! Doesn't mean you should be rushed into surgery ASAP! Because you'll get people that will want you to get a bi-lateral mastectomy two days after your diagnoses. And although,I'm telling you what you should or shouldn't do, I'm merely setting up a pathway that others can follow. You'll know what is right for you. There is so much information out there, it'll be difficult not to want to consume it all. In the end, it's your life and your decision. Just know, you're not alone. That was the worst thing in the world to me. To be the only 20-something in my family that has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. So, I reached out to other breast cancer survivors and they have become my family. Seek out help. There are so many resources. http://www.cancer.org/docroot/home/index.asp http://www.hopkinsbreastcenter.org/ http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cancer-diagnosis/HQ00379

And to the families and loved ones , you need help in coping too. As I mentioned above, try not to say "it's just hair, it'll grow back".
Please don't beg for updates every day or call every day. I KNOW how hard that is because you're worried. At times, we lose our strength and our voices and can't speak up for ourselves. So sometimes, you need to be the one to tell everyone else "Hey, enough is enough, she's/he's tired, in pain, and can't talk right now".

There is a GREAT website that I used to keep my family members updated. I tried using Myspace for awhile, but many older folks shy away from Myspace.

www.caringbridge.org/

It is a non-profit website for those going through medical crisis. Family members sign up to receive updates that you post once in your journal in their email inboxes. It really helped when I wanted my family to be updated all at once.

You can view mine and what I went through at: http://caringbridge.org/visit/jenniferlehman
To help better understand what one goes through.
This was one of my favorite songs while I was going through chemotherapy:
This Is Not Goodbye Artist: Melissa Etheridge Bravely you let go of my hand I can't speak yet you understand Where I go now I go alone This path I walk these days of stone And the angels are calling I must go away Wait for me here Silently stay And don't ask me why Only believe This is not good bye All of my strength all my desire Still cannot melt this breath of fire I go to meet some kind of test Bury the truth that scars my chest And the angels are calling and calling I gathered all my courage I shaved off all my fear With this banner on my shoulder I hold your essence near And the angels are calling and calling and calling
<!--

I was PUSHED out of the hospital at 9am Feb 20,2007. I should have stayed another night in the hospital. But they told me I needed to be "weaned" off the IV. Regardless if I needed pain meds via IV. They didn't have me on a PCA (Patient Controlled Pain Meds) because they didn't "want my body to get used to it". What kind of BULLSHIT is that? This Bill in congress is to ensure that a woman or a man getting a mastectomy have a min of 48 hours in the hospital. That's not a max and it's not set in stone. It is to ensure that the decision to go home is made between the woman and her doctor. NOT an insurance company!I was told by a NP "it's not the insurance companies" then WHO is it????? I have been told over and over that it is entirely TOO soon to be sent home not even 24 hours following my surgery. My husband had NO clue wht to do with my drains. What to do with his wife that was reduced to a crumpled mess of tears on the bathroom floor in the hotel. END drive thru mastectomies and sign this petition. I URGE you! Also,if you can pass this along to others you know who might sign , please do.
Jennifer L.
Sign Here!!!!!

LIFETIME AND MILLIONS OF ITS VIEWERS APPLAUD THE RE-INTRODUCTION OF THE BIPARTISAN BREAST CANCER PATIENT PROTECTION ACT
LifetimeTV.com petition in support of bill exceeds record-breaking 14+ million signatures February 1, Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senators Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) together with Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (D-CT) renewed their support for breast cancer patients by reintroducing The Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act.

The bipartisan Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act would end the practice of "drive-through" mastectomies, where women are sometimes forced to leave the hospital sometimes just hours following their physically and emotionally difficult surgeries even if they and their doctors feel they are not ready to go home.

This act would ensure a minimum hospital stay of 48 hours to any woman following a mastectomy. It does not mandate a 48 hour hospital stay nor does it set 48 hours as a maximum amount of time a woman can stay in the hospital. It simply ensures that any decision in favor of a shorter or longer hospital stay will be made by the patient and her doctor. As part of the Network's award-winning Stop Breast Cancer for Life advocacy campaign, LifetimeTV.com has collected more than 14 million petition signatures in support of this legislation.

Lifetime launched the online petition in 1997, when it was first made aware of the problem of "drive-through" mastectomies by Representative DeLauro and by viewers. The re-introduction follows a recent Capitol Hill press conference, part of the Network's Stop Breast Cancer for Life campaign, featuring Grammy® nominated singer/songwriter Jewel joined by Lifetime executives, Members of Congress, medical experts and breast cancer survivors to urge Congress to end this cruel practice.

Additionally, Jewel appeared in special public service announcements driving viewers to sign the petition at LifetimeTV.com. These spots aired on Lifetime throughout the month of October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. "Lifetime is proud to stand with Senators Snowe and Landrieu and Representative DeLauro on this important issue that allows women and doctors the ability to decide when women are ready to go home following major breast cancer surgery. Our viewers have been calling for this legislation to be passed for more than ten years — it's time for Congress to act," said Meredith Wagner, Executive Vice President, Lifetime Entertainment Services and founder of the network's Stop Breast Cancer for Life campaign.

"We are renewing our effort today to ensure that the millions of American women diagnosed with breast cancer each year know they will receive the care they need and deserve," said Senator Snowe. "Guaranteeing that women have the option of remaining in the hospital for up to 48 hours following a mastectomy provides both the patient and the doctor with piece of mind and the time to make appropriate treatment decisions. It is inexplicable that the Congress has not taken action to ensure this basic right to adequate treatment, and I urge my colleagues in both the House and the Senate to enact this legislation immediately."

"After being diagnosed with breast cancer, a woman will work with her doctor to determine if a mastectomy is the best option and should have her hospital stay determined by her doctor — not her insurance company. Yet many will be forced to leave the hospital when they are still in pain, groggy from anesthesia, and with drainage tubes that require professional attention because their HMO will not cover their stay," said Representative DeLauro. "I have worked on the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act for an entire decade in this Congress, without a vote or hearing ever having been held. The time has come to pass this common-sense, compassionate legislation in support of women's health.

When faced with a crisis like breast cancer, the last thing any woman should have to do is fight her insurance company for basic health care." "In no civilized country in the world should a mastectomy be an outpatient procedure," Senator Landrieu said. "Medical decisions should be made by women and their doctors, not by nameless, faceless file clerks following nameless, faceless guidelines.

I have heard far too many stories from women and their families about being forced to leave the hospital too soon after a mastectomy, and it is long past time that Congress recognizes the importance of allowing a woman to stay in the hospital after this very difficult, both physically and emotionally, experience."

Legislation to ban "drive-through" mastectomies is supported by American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, Association of Women's Health, breastcancer.org, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, Families USA, Oncology Nursing Society, Society for Women's Health Research, The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and Y-Me National Breast Cancer Organization. The Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act had 19 cosponsors in the U.S. Senate and 185 cosponsors in the U.S. House in the 109th Congress. The legislation was reintroduced with 13 cosponsors in the Senate and 127 cosponsors in the House
<!--

It never remains the same. I can't say that I want to return to things prior to my diagnoses. It's impossible. The people, the experiences, the whole of it changed me completely.
I feel more tolerant and patient with people and things.
At any rate, my surgery went really well. Absolutely NO lymph node involvement! Which is the best news. However....last week with my post op appointments, I found out that my tumor was not .9 cm it was 2.4cm with two additional tumors being DCIS (they weren't the invasive type) Which is good.
I'm really glad I didn't get the lumpectomy. I'm also glad I went with Johns Hopkins. The way they handled everything. Well, except when I got out of surgery and was sent up to my post op room. Holy shit, where do they train their RNs for that unit?!
The RN helped me to the bathroom then got a call about another patient and took off without handing my issue off to another nurse. My pain was bouncing from a 7 to an 8 for nearly 4 hours. She kept giving me morphine via IV and it didn't do a damn thing for me. So, they finally did .04 of Dilaudid via IV every two hours and 4mg of Dilaudid every 4 hours. That was all they could do.
I'd awake every hour and a half to two hours for more pain relief. They finally added Torodol to the mix which helped out a lot. and that wasn't until 3:30AM. I was finally able to sleep until 8am after that.
I woke up after surgery and felt the most terrible burning in my chest, nurses were yelling at me to breathe in deep, they had a mask over my mouth. They said it was to prevent nausea from anesthesia.
I quickly reached down to check how many drainage tubes I had. 1! That meant my lymph nodes were safe and cancer free. I had to look at it. Where my breast had been. I had to know right then and there because I needed to know my reaction. If that makes any sense. I looked down and saw that my right chest area was raised up and puffed up from the expander. The plastic surgeon was able to conserve quite a bit of my skin and put in a decent sized expander. I look down and felt relieved. It was done. The cancer was OUT. That was what filled my mind while I was in recovery.
I laid there and this nurse "Heidi" kept running in and out of the room. Rotating me between two different pain meds. I forgot what the other one was, but I know one of them was fentinel. It was a fast acting but short lasting pain med. It did help.

I don't recall being transferred to my room. I do remember that when I got there, the two people there that were supposed to help me had no flippin clue how to transfer a patient from one bed to another. I held my left arm out to the man "Streeter" or something like that. I was signaling for him to link his arm with mine so I wouldn't have to use my right sided muscles. He was clueless! Oy.
So,with my left arm I gently and slowly scooted to my bed. My husband left to go do a few things. I don't remember what now. My dad was there with me. Poor man. Had to watch me slowly go down hill in regards to the pain management team that was working with me. I was progressively getting agitated and more upset with the staff. I finallly blew up on the nurse "Esther". (Yes that was her name!)I told her she was a clueless nurse that wouldn't know good nursing practices and protocol if it came up and bit her in the ass! I wasn't very nice, but of course...there was a lot more that had happened that led me to that blow up point. Aren't RNs supposed to get SOME form of CNA training as well? To know how to assist a patient to the toilet? How to go up the chain of command when your pain isn't being handled? When you're unable to position yourself?
At any rate, my dad finally got someone with the authority to change up my meds down there to reassess the situation and got my medication changed.
That night, at change over, I had a nurse "Peace" (yeah, uncanny eh?) come in and was absolutely fantastic. She kept my pain managed very well.
The next morning I was booted out of there in the morning. They didn't order up a wheelchair or anything. I wasn't all that able to walk but for a few steps at a time.Sigh.
At any rate, these past two weeks have been hard and slow going. Each day I'm able to gain back some ability. I'm still really weepy from my experience. I'm sad that I lost my boob, but happy that I have a second chance at life.
Chemotherapy is up next. My appointment with the Oncologist is March 7. I'll find out more then. With respect to how long, with what type of chemo drugs.....
The chemo part is what scares me.
<!--

"Here are a few of my favorite things" From Sound of Music (I LOVE that movie!)

Here are mine:
(Ok,gotta gush about Fuller Brush products for a bit!)

I bought the Floor Saver (http://fullerdirect.com/products_detail.asp?cat=1&subcat=3&id=558 if prompted enter ID# 0635615 )

Yes, I told you about it before. But I just recently used it on my counter tops (watch it! It isn't a germ eliminator, I suggest a germicidal cleaner as well!)
It also restored that beautiful wood color to my dining room table. It works on cabinets, wood floors...you name it! Restoring that beautiful shiney wooden look that fades with time and spills and drying out. The Labor Floor Saver has oils in it for wood floors and cabinets. That is SUCH a bonus!
Ok,onto my next Favorite things:

Ice cream! wow, I've been eating so much Weight Watchers Smart Ones Ice Cream bars! Can't get enough!

Politics. I have been frequenting the AOL Forum Boards about the War in Iraq. Nursing mothers/Breastfeeding debate. That's been my entertainment these past few days!

Books. Books on business, politics, how-to (do ANYTHING)Buddhism.

Movies: My current love "V for Vendetta". Very deep and philosophical movie. here's my review: My Review

Pizza: You can NEVER have too much!

Pasta:Makes your butt get big, but I say eat up! Our pasts were pretty badly embittered by just stupid crap. We both had our issues, we both blamed eachother, we both decided to ignore one another and or take a passive aggressive perception of one another. It's only just this weekend, that things...the last 25 years, have finally started to melt away. People might think this is silly, etc. But if people knew what occured and how badly we treated eachother. It wasn't a normal brother and sister rivalry thing. About two years ago, when I was pregnant with my second son... terrible things occured that I spurred into action. I should not have delt with things as I had. I caused horrible pain to people who matter a lot to me.

Well, a month ago..when I discovered my brother was to come in from his 7 month deployment, and no one would be there to greet him, well..at the time I thought his girlfriend would be there. It didn't matter, I had to be there for him, for me, for the brother/sister relationship I had always wanted, but always seemed to sabotage when given the opportunity.
It was time to lay bitterness and resentfulness and anger to rest. I saw how my husband's sisters would be so welcoming, and him to them. They have a good relationship. Which I envied.

Anyway, when I realized my brother would be coming in...I decided to be there when his sub pulled in and surprise him! To be there in support. We recently lost a beloved uncle. My brother has been unable to grieve until now. He has had to endure 7 months of hearing bad news over and over again... but still have to keep it together to do his job. He got off that sub and he looked so worn. I've never seen him like that. I still get emotional when I think that I got to be there and show him that at last, I care. That he's my brother and I am there for him. No matter what crap transpired between us. I know it meant a lot to him. I'm glad I could do it. I'm glad God sent us to this cruddy place, for that purpose. If nothing else comes of us being moved here, I had the opportunity to do something for my brother. To be there for him. To bring his nephews and brighten up his life. If nothing else comes from this re-station, that is enough.

He's coming to visit us tomorrow, and I must say, I'm happy about it. 25 years is a long time to fight and be at odds with a sibling. I hope he knows, how much he does mean to me. How proud I am of him. He never knew it, but I always bragged about him to other people. Even when we were at odds. I hope he reads this. We're both unable to say a lot of what we feel out loud. But I hope somehow, he gets a hold of this blog and reads it. I'm still too shy and too much of a chicken to send it to him right now. When things are still so tentative and fragile.
<!--

I'm thankful of my family, where ever they may be at this moment. I'm thankful for my wonderful friends who always know when I need a helping hand. I'm thankful for the joys all these people bring into my life. I could not have become the person I am today without them. I feel they are the reason I am where I am at now. Happy with who I am, what I've accomplished, and what I've achieved. I may not be rich in monetary values, but I am thankful that I am rich where it truly counts. Those that I know and who are an integral part of my life.

I am thankful that my brother returned home safely. I am very proud of him and my husband and for their services they perform every day, out of camera shots, away from the public eye. People like them, and people who are in public services should be admired and commended for their outstanding jobs. I am thankful they work every day to protect people, save lives, teach our children, run into a burning house when everyone else is running out.

If you can stop for one minute, and remember what you are thankful for and tell those that you appreciate them, this world would become just a little brighter and slightly better than it was before. In my beliefs, we can all overcome the obstacles that life and God put infront of us. With determination, persistance, faith, integrity, honesty, and anything else you can think of...we can pretty much achieve and overcome anything. These are my thoughts for Thanksgiving Day. Happy Holidays and post comments if you feel you should!
<!--

Headaches and nausea...I decided to mop my floors with my new Fuller Brush floor cleaner. Now, mind you, I've used Pine Sol ever since I knew HOW to clean floors. It was typically the product of choice. I liked the smell (sometimes it irritated my eyes) but if I accidentally got any chemical on my wood side paneling, there would be matte looking streaks left behind. So, instead...this time I used the Fuller Brush stuff. All I have to say is WOW! It not only was it shiney afterwards, it cleaned my cabinets and made them shine like new.

There were no streaks left behind. I also use the stain remover for clothes. ANOTHER great product. anyway, I'm still a bit sick with whatever I have. I keep getting really bad headaches in the evenings a long with stomach pains. It's so weird because it just started happening. Anyway, email or leave comments if you'd like!
<!--

I've tried a lot of different "Work From Home" schemes. Wasted a lot of money on them too. Until I was pointed towards Fuller Brush. I could easily join up without spending a dime on the Starter Kit. I love the products, I love the people I 'work' with. Best of all, I stay home with my kids. I am not a millionaire by any means. It is possible with Fuller Brush. I would just rather make supplemental income and have some extra cash, especially for the Holidays!

If you want to be a stay at home parent, I really recommend Fuller Brush. It's been around 100 years and still has one of the best reputations for services and quality. I know those words get tossed around a lot. This is not a "make $1000 a week" scheme. Never has been, never will be. It requires effort and persistance.

In my opinion, work at home jobs and/or sales jobs NEVER work out unless you truly believe in what you are doing. I do. I haven't become rich, but I believe in this company. More so than any other company I've worked for. And I'm not really "working for" them. I'm not required to sell anything! I'm not required to "work". I'm not required to recruit.

You can join up and just buy the products at a discount. You don't have to sell! There's no monthly quota you have to meet. No pressure to recruit. It's all in how you make it.
There's several very reasonably priced kit options available on my site http://Jenzgemzandmore.com If you still don't believe me,try it out for 30 days. You've lost nothing. You spent nothing! This is our Free Kit option:
FREE Kit - R202 FREE.Not sure if Fuller is right for you? Still undecided? Then join at absolutely no cost, no risk, and no obligation.
Order our FREE Information Starter Kit, look it over, and then decide. Use it, or let it collect dust. It's up to you. Includes:
1 Year Distributorship Registration
1 - Fuller Gold Business Manual
4 - Monthly Sale Brochures
2 - Master Catalogs
1 - Order Pad Purchase Orders and Price Lists "Welcome" and "How Do I Begin?" Information And more!

Ok, so I turned an "about me" section into a sales pitch. Woops!Ok,onto about me! Really!
My name is Jennifer Lehman. My husband is USAF. We just recently moved from Alaska to Delaware. I have two sons. Kyle and Ricky. I worked as a CNA for a long time, did mostly retail before that. I attended an internet college Grantham University, it got too expensive (this was before I joined Fuller Brush) so I had to stop attending school for a bit. Then we moved and I am looking around at other colleges in the Delaware area. I hope to obtain a Bachelors in Business. My dad would prefer if I went to Law School. I could do that, as I have a LOVE for arguing and debating. However, I believe it would seriously take away from family life. And as of right now, I love having time with my kids. They grow up too fast! Please please feel free to IM me, I have my AIM name listed , my email listed, and my website if you do choose to start up.

I sell the kits on my website. Please be advised, however, the "buy now" button for the Free kit is buggy. I would have to refer you to the main site if you chose that option. I will get my own personal online shopping cart done so I don't have to bother with the "bugs" in Google and Paypal. (They won't let me "sell" any items for "free" or "0.00". There has to be a value amount in order to work. Like I said, I WILL get that fixed asap.
<!--
